The Story
Kimi started his 2007 season in style winning the opening race in Australia from pole position. It was his first race for Ferrari and he made the instant impression within the team. Unfortunately between Australia and Malaysia the F2008 was involved in a Fleible floor controversy and Ferrari removed it for the next race which seemed to have set them back and Mclaren looked much stronger against them than they did in Australia. Kimi then had a few rather average races in Malaysia, Bahrain and a retirement in Spain. It was Monaco that was the tip of the iceburg though, Kimi was struggling with the car and clipping of the barrier was the result in qualifing putting him near the back. In the race he managed to salvage a point but while Mclaren were 1-2 it was poor payback.
So after Monaco the team really needed to bounce back it didn't happen in the two oversees races at Canada and Indianapolis where agian Kimi looked rather average scoring only 9 points when Hamilton won them both. Lewis looked super strong having never been off the podium. 26 Points ahead of Kimi was going to be a big gap to close.
France is where 2007 turned around for Kimi, qualifying 3rd Saturday then another telling factor was the start. kimi recently had been getting very poor starts. In France he rocketed pass Lewis off the grid, then playing the long game agianst team mate Massa to take him in the pits and Kimi wins his second race of the season. This was then followed up by another win at Silverstone.
From France to the season finalae in Brazil the only blip was in Germany where Kimi suffered a hydraulics failure. Fortunaltely Lewis also ran out of luck and finished out the points in 9th. A run of podiums in Hungary, Turkey and Italy kept Kimi in the title hunt. Going into happy hunting ground in Belgium the chances were slim. He won taking his 3rd Consecutive Belgium win. Japan was a lucky escape managing to keep it on the track and on the podium despite the weather. Lewis however still won the race taking his lead to 17 points with only two races to go, championship all but over for Kimi.
So to China with nothing to lose it was all or nothing. Again the race was affected by rain but this time Kimi had the upper hand, the Ferrari using its tyres more effectively allowed Kimi to pass Lewis on the track. A few laps later was a moment which I will never forget, seeing Lewises mclaren wade its way through the gravel when entering the pits and stopping. Kimi going on to win cut the lead to 7 points which would still need another mistake from Lewis in the last race. If that wasn't enough Fernando Alonso was only 4 points behind Lewis so Kimi would have to beat both.
So Qualifing went Mclarens way with Massa on pole but Lewis ahead of Kimi in second, Kimi third and Alonso 4th. Both Kimi and Alonso took Lewis in the first lap, after a poor attempt by Lewis to get back at Alonso he ended up down the grid after running wide. Then the most bizarre incident I have seen, the Mclaren of Lewis couldn't find a gear and was just crawling along the track. Whos fault is was who knows but he managed to restart the system. By this time he was almost if not last.
At this point Massa lead Kimi with Alonso in third. Kimi fuelled heavy on his first stop to over take Massa on his second stop. Alonso didn't have the pace to threaten the Ferraris and it was now all about how far lewis could recover up the grid. The laps ticked down and all of Kimis fans on the edge of there seats wating for the chequered flag as if things stayed as they were Kimi would win the championship. When the chequred flag finally fell lewis was in 7th and Kimi had done it. He won the championship by 1 point from both mclarens who were both on 109 points.
There was a protest by Mclaren over fuel temperatures after the race but it didn't affect the championship. A 17 point lead vanished in two races and party time for Ferrari and Kimis fans worldwide, finally the championship was his ... about time.
