2009 Drivers and Teams

Car NumberDriverTeamAbout
Lewis Hamilton1Lewis HamiltonMclaren-MercedesThe current youngest world champion, has made a massive impact on the sport after joining in 2007, almost winning the championship, getting the better of double world champion Alonso. Lewis will have a tough 2009 as the car isn't at the top of the pack and could be a telling story on how he copes.
Heikki Kovalinen2Heikki KovalinenMclaren-MercedesDebuted in 2007 for Renault then replaced Alonso last year at Mclaren. He struggled to compete with Lewis last year, winning just one race at Hungary ending up 7th in the championship in both years. This year Heikki needs to step up a gear if he is to make a real impression on his team mate.
Felipe Massa3Felipe MassaScuderia FerrariA very fortunate man to have gotten his seat at Ferrari in 2006 as he was not that highly rated in the paddock but since then has been an understudy of Schumacher and has steadily improved to become a genuine title contender. Just missing out on the 2008 title, this year he will agian be strong but the competition is also very tight.
Kimi Raikkonen4Kimi RaikkonenScuderia FerrariWhere to start... Debuted in 2001 with sauber with very little experience, moved to mclaren in 2002 where he had two shots at the title but was let down by the car and moved to Ferrari in 2007 where he won the championship at the last race. After rumors of loss of motivation last season this year Kimi needs to prove he still has the magic of past years.
Robert Kubica5Robert KubicaBMW SauberKubica is another bright star of the future, started in mid-2006 replacing Jacques Villeneuve at BMW, an impressive podium at Monza helped gain him his seat for 2007. In 2008 he won his first race at Canada and lead the championship briefly but BMW stoped development of the car to focus on 2009. He is the only polish driver ever to have raced in Formula 1.
Nick Heidfeld6Nick HeidfeldBMW SauberTeam mate to Raikkonen in 2001 he was always a strong driver but never got picked up by a bigger team. He has been out performed by Kubica over 2008, He also has never won a race despite competing in over 150 races and has had the most 2nd places without a win.
Fernando Alonso7Fernando AlonsoRenaultMade his name by impressing at Minardi in 2001 then after a year testing raced for Renault in 2003 taking his first win at the Hungarian GP. 2004 was a year of progress at Renault and by 2005 they were ready to challange for the title which he did. Beating Kimi due to the R25's reliability and consistancy. He then beat Schumacher to the 2006 world title after the Ferrari had a first engine failure in many years in China.
Nelson Piquet8Nelson PiquetRenaultWas it his dad's name that got him into formula 1? He had a difficult first year at Renault scoring only one lucky podium but retiring 9 times. He was almost replaced mid season after he only finished 3 of the first 9 races, he did then manage to pick up and start scoring some points after that. He managed to keep his seat for this year but needs to impress if he is to stay there I feel.
Jarno Trulli9Jarno TrulliToyotaOne of the most experienced drivers in the field, having been racing in F1 since 1997. His one and only win was at Monaco in 2004 but since falling out with Flavio he joined Toyota which has not reguarly been up the front end. He has had the measure of his team mates, This year the Toyota looks more competitive and Trulli can show what he is capable of.
Timo Glock10Timo GlockToyotaHad a few races for Jordan in 2004 then his name reapeared after winning the GP2 title. Started with a crash in 2008 spreading his toyota all over the track. Then had a string of no-scoring results until a 4th at the action packed Canadian GP his best drive was at singapore when he drove to a genuine 4th place.
Sebastien Bourdias11Sebastien BourdiasToro RossoA multiple champ car title winner came to F1 in 2008, he failed to make the impact he probabily wanted being out classed by team mate Vettel. Keeping his seat for 2009 he needs to show his rookie team mate whos boss if he is to survive for 2010.
Sebastien Buemi12Sebastien BuemiToro RossoThe only rookie in the field this year, another Sebastien driving for Toro Rosso. Coming from GP2 his seat may have been more about money than speed as Takumo Sato also was an option for the team. In australia he out qualified his team mate to fisish 7th.
Mark Webber14Mark WebberRed BullA very promising driver when he was at Jaguar but failed to get the results either due to the car or just bad luck. He had the option to go to Renault in 2005 but chose williams instead, a mistake when you look back at the season. He was involved in an accident during the winter and has just about recovered in time for Australia, with a new team mate who is no slouch this is an important year for Webber as the car looks competitive.
Sebastian Vettel15Sebastian VettelRed BullPromoted from the 'B-Team' red bull he out performed his car on several occations even giving the team it's first win in Italy in the rain. This year he looks set to continue and should still be challanging for wins agian the battle with his team mate is vital if he is to continue to prove his speed.
Nico Rosberg16Nico RosbergWilliamsNow in his 4th Season at Williams he has proved to be a strong racer although the williams has not always been able to provide him with a car solid enough to be a regular points winner. Only having scored two podiums in Australia and Singapore 2008 this year he will want to spraying more of the champaigne as this years car is in the upper section of the grid.
Kazuki Nakajima17Kazuki NakajimaWilliamsNakajima has shown flashes of speed, he also only failed to finish 2 races last year. It would be a tough task to beat his team mate however so he needs to just keep the points coming in to guarentee his seat.
Adrian Sutil20Adrian SutilForce IndiaSutil had some impressive performances in late 2007 which put him in the light a little. After easily disposing of his team mates at Midland he scored his only point at Japan 2007 and had a strong drive in monaco the following year. Which was really the only highlight of 2008. with more retirements than finishes. Force India will probabily be at the back of the grid this year with Toro Rosso.
Giancarlo Fisichella21Giancarlo FisichellaForce IndiaAnother very experienced driver but had his chance in 2005 and 06 with a championship winning car but was totallly anilated by Alonso. He was been know for driving mediocre cars but more effectivly. Was much more consistant than Sutil last year although this year too he will be at the back of the field.
Jenson Button22Jenson ButtonBrawn GPNearly didn't have a drive this year after Honda pulled out but after a couple of dire years Button finds himeself with a real peach of a car and it is essential that he makes the most of it in these early races before the other teams catch up with the rear diffuser. He could be a real contender this year.
Rubens Barrichello23Rubens BarrichelloBrawn GPThe jolly brasillian also is in for a good season with the Brawn GP car winning on it's debut Rubens must beat Jenson to get the upper hand if he is going to win the title. He is the most experienced driver in the field and has won several races for Ferrari after being Micheals number 2 for many years.
